Common problem
Air Conditioner Frozen in Blackwood
An air conditioner frozen over is easy to spot: ice on the copper pipes, frost on the indoor coil, or the outdoor unit wearing a shell of white.
The system is not overcooling. It is choking on its own cold, and every hour it runs that way shortens its life.
Homes across Blackwood, from the mid-century brick veneers to the family houses on the larger leafy blocks, run reverse-cycle split and ducted systems hard through both seasons. Ice does not care which brand you own. It cares about airflow and refrigerant, and when either runs short, the coil ices up.
Why Air Conditioners Freeze Up
The causes stack up from cheapest to dearest. Most are fixable on a single visit, especially if you switch the unit off early rather than letting it grind on.
A blocked filter
Dirty coils
A failing fan
Low refrigerant
What You Can Safely Check
Switch the unit off at the wall first.
Once it is off and thawing, pull the filter out and look at it against the light. If you cannot see through it, that alone may explain the ice. Wash it, let it dry fully and refit it.
Then check the outdoor unit.
Give the system a few hours to thaw completely. Do not chip at the ice or pour hot water over anything.

When a Frozen Air Conditioner Needs a Technician
Call us if the ice returns after a clean filter and a clear outdoor unit. Call us too if the fan sounds laboured, or if the unit freezes again the same week.
Those point to refrigerant or mechanical faults that no amount of DIY will touch. Refrigerant work is legally restricted. Handling it is done under our ARC Licence L162586, RAC01 - Full Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Licence.
Most homes here are owner-occupied and well maintained, so we find people catch ice early. That usually keeps the repair small.
Cooling Faults We Fix Across Blackwood
Our air conditioning repairs team carries the testing gear to find the actual cause on the first visit.
That might be a slow leak, a failing fan motor or a coil that needs a proper clean. If the fault turns out to sit alongside another symptom, like water dripping once the ice melts, we cover that too on our air conditioner leaking water page.
A frozen coil and warm airflow often travel together. If your unit ices up and then blows nothing cold at all, our air conditioner not cooling page explains that side of it.

Questions
Frozen Air Conditioner FAQs
How long should I leave a frozen unit off?
Leave it off for at least a few hours so every trace of ice on the coil and the refrigerant pipework melts completely, because running a unit over ice risks damaging the compressor.
Can I speed up the thaw with a hairdryer or hot water?
Please do not, because heat applied to a frozen coil can crack components or push meltwater where it should never go, and patience costs nothing while a cracked coil does not.
Will a frozen air conditioner fix itself once thawed?
Sometimes it will if the cause was a dirty filter, but low refrigerant, a failing fan or a choked coil will freeze the unit again, so a proper diagnosis is worth booking.
Is a frozen unit an emergency?
It becomes one if the unit is still running and the compressor is labouring, so switch it off at the wall first, then call us and we will get to you under our Within-the-Hour Response where availability allows.
